QUILTING- I am learning

I have joined a quilting group that meets every Thursday morning.  Each year they do a group quilt.  Everyone who would like to participate signs up with the given theme.  For example: Alaska for the theme.  Then each person determines what they think of Alaska...bald eagles, whales, skiing, fishing, bush planes, etc.  Then each person makes a square...um 20 squares...of the same thing.  So if I chose bald eagles I would have to make 20 squares of a bald eagle.  That way they can give one of theirs to all the participants and they in turn can collect 19 other squares to make one quilt for themselves.

This years theme is a Chicken Quilt.  Some of the ideas for each square have been chickens, eggs, fried eggs, dancing chickens, baby chicks, barn and silo.  I chose to do the silo.  That is right.  I am making 20 silos for the group.  I have until August 2012 to complete them.

I called my friend over to help me.  I have never done applique and quilting in this manner.  I was eager to learn.  She helped me complete my first square.  We did it on another fabric to just try it out and experiment to help me determine what I want it to look like.  What do you think?  Only 20 more to go.

My first square ever!!!!
My pile of all of my squares.  I have them all cut.  Still need to sew them all.

A closer look.  I am a bit proud.  I've always wanted to learn how to do this.  As my four year old says to me..."that is a brag mom".  He is right.  I am bragging.  I did it!  The real question is can I finish it and turn it into a real chicken quilt by August 2012!
