How Many Salmon? I can't remember.

So after lots of struggle getting my brain wrapped around the 5 different types of Salmon in Alaska, my friend taught my kids this easy way to remember.  Finally, I don't look like a fool as I hear my hubby and others talking about what type is in, where, how long, and what gear is needed.  So here is the quick lesson on Alaskan Salmon.

#1 is your thumb.  CHUM rhymes with thumb.

#2 is your pointer.  If you aren't looking someone could SOCK you in the EYE.  Then your eye will turn RED.

#3 is your middle finger.  Because it is the biggest finger, it is the KING.  Kings are the biggest, usually.

#4 is your ring finger.  And most rings are in gold or SILVER. Also known as COHO.

#5 is your pinky finger...get it PINK(y)? Also known as Humpies.

And Lastly, for reference...Your hand turns into the state of Alaska.
Your thumb is the inside passage.  Your index finger is the aleutian islands.  And we live in the "armpit" of Alaska.  In between those two.  Barrow is up on top.  Nome is on the far left side.

Now you too are Alaska Salmon Smart!
