Sledding, Queens and We FOUND the INFAMOUS moose!

We FINALLY found the moose...well...one moose.  But to create some suspense lets talk about some sledding and my ice skating queen.  The weather was a balmy 5 degrees.  Perfect to go ice skating and sledding in...eh...right?  So we headed out after gearing up.  Down the hill we trod to the school skating rink and hills.  By the time we got there we were nearly frozen.  The girls hair had a coat of ice on it where our breathe had passed and frozen instantly.  We looked as if we had beards.  The girls refused pictures. (They are starting to care about their appearances...oh dear...I see a scary future.)

We got the boys sledding.  They have so much fun.  It is so cute watching them go up and down and up and down like nothing.  They usually stay the warmest because they are constantly moving.  It is amazing...seriously...5 degree weather and they are having a blast! Here are those amazing boys who brave any weather to have a good time.

THE SLEDDING POSSE!

THE ICE QUEEN
After struggling to get the ice skates on the girls, it was so cold that it would freeze the leather making it very difficult to put on your ice skates, they had fun.  Frozen hard leather...frozen foot...frozen fingers trying to tie them up...makes skating a tough sport, but success was reached.  And here is my darling ice queen.  She has only ice skated twice before.  But I have to admit, she is excellent on her roller blades.  So it seemed to be a peice of cake going from roller blades to ice blades.  They can do it on reccess, but they have to wear a helmet.  (This has detoured many girls from doing it anymore...how embaressing!)  So here she is...the wonderful ICE QUEEN!  She loves it and begs to go daily.  The struggle is what detours me...it's hard work just getting her ready to skate in freezing weather.

Falls still happen at times, but at the end of it all....she is still smiling!

THE MOOSE:
Thank you for being patient....and here it is!(I say "IT" because all moose have lost thier racks this time of year so you can't tell male and female as easily...I wasn't getting close enough to see this either)

We have been searching for a moose since we got here.  I had come in October for a week and never saw one.  So we were on the hunt.  But nothing.  Then just as we had returned from sledding and skating and had just thawed in our warm 62 degree home (amazing how warm that feels after being in 5 degree weather) the call came.
"On my way home.  Found a moose in the neighborhood.  Come jump in the car.  We are going to see a moose!"

And there it was...at the top of our neighborhood.  We drove by not once, but twice.

Some facts about MOOSE:

They are very shy.  They tolerate people, but really they are happy never seeing us and never being seen.  To get a face shot of a moose is very difficult.  I will continue to try...trust me.  They grow thier antlers only during thier rut to compete for mates.  It comes out velvety and then falls off when they start to battle.  Only males grow the rack in the fall.  Then afterwards, they shed their entire rack and regrow them each year.  It is illegal to searh for and find/ have possession of a rack.  (For my friends that may be wanting one...to place on thier walls.)  They are considered the most dangerous animal in Alaska to humans.  There are more deaths from moose than bear!  I was told by my neighbors that every year moose come to eat from the apple trees on the side of my house.  Last year the moose broke off a whole branch and walked down the street with it.  Yes, I will try to capture this if it happends again. This leads to the next topic...

THE HOUSE:

As requested by my parents...a shot of our house and the snow!  Basically, they aren't concerned until the snowfall is above 6 inches a day here.  7 inches just might make it onto the news as normal but once you hit 8 inches in a short amount of time, then it will be considered a winter warning.  Everything under is normal.  Currently we are about knee-high in snow if you walk in unplowed areas.  Apparently we lost a lot of the early snow with our ice and rain storms.  So we are again beginning to build back the snow that was lost.  I will post later how we get around and how they keep the roads and sidewalks/walkways clear.

ISN'T IT BEAUTIFUL!
