Chena Hot Springs-Fairbanks

This place was wonderful.  It is a hot springs similiar to Glenwood Springs in Colorado that we loved, but much smaller.  It is tucked away 56 miles outside of Fairbanks.  The road dead ends at the springs.  It is a nice drive...surely beautiful in the summer. Kids are not allowed in the hot hot water outside, but they have two hot tubs inside and a large pool and a hot tub outside that the kids can go in.  My guess is that it is just too hot.  Seriously...it was hot.  But utterly wonderful.  Bathrooms are tight and water smells like sulphur.
On our way back we had a decision to make...where to eat.  If we waited, the kids would be asleep AND hungry.  So we noticed this on the side of the road.  Doesn't look like much, but why not?  Seems to be our theme for this whole Alaska Experience.  WHY NOT?

Inside this tiny little cottage was a great little joint.  It is a cabin retreat.  DRY CABIN:  A cabin that has no running water or any sort.  Basically, you are camping but sleeping inside a cabin instead of a tent.  Good to know for future rentals.  But we met the sweetest people inside here.  It is owned by a grandpa who lost his wife earlier this year and now he himself is needing some surgery.  His grand-daughter and her husband have decided to purchase the property and run it.  They made the most delicious burgers and onion rings for us.   Plus, look at the inside of this place.  So COOL.  Many places try to immitate, but this is the real deal.  And Sis found a friend to play with outside.  If she could take him home with us she would.  They kids beg me daily for a dog.  I can't do it yet.

This furnace is custom made and has been heating this place for over 20 years.  A twenty inch tree fits in it and burns all day long.

This bear was shot on the property along with another one on the wall.

The next morning D-man was upset that we wouldn't give him a coke in the morning.  But we did give him the breakfast of champions,  ICE CREAM.  We couldn't bring it with us nor could we waste it.
